Surf and Sunshine for first Kingscliff Tri Success
The exciting event is a first for the town, attracting competitors, both young and old, for the three event categories, Junior, Tempta and the Almost Olympic.
Conditions were promising for the nervous junior competitors who took to the ocean first to start the mini program. The rising humidity didn’t deter the excited competitors as they swam, rode and ran their way to glory in the inaugural event.
It was the Almost Olympic event which provided a thrilling spectacle for onlookers.
In the men’s open division the swim leg at the start separated the leaders from the pack with Paul Wiedersehn, Stephen Madden and Ricky Swindale battling it out for first place. It was a close race, but Paul Wiedersehn crossed the line first, almost one second ahead.
Today’s triathlon is a pilot event for the Tweed Shire, but will run biannually, with the major event for 2010, scheduled for September.
“As the pilot triathlon event for Kingscliff in 2010, we are really pleased with the interest from competitors, and how today’s event has been received,” he says.
All efforts now will be focused on improving the event, so that September’s triathlon in Kingscliff see’s a bigger and better field of competitors.
